Top 5 Tips for Moving in San Antonio When You're a Retiree
Many of us hope for happiness in being retired. After many years of working hard, we finally get to kick our feet up, unwind, and enjoy the fruits of our labors. Some people discover that when they attain senior citizen status that they now need to move. It could be that it is because they no longer need the area in their San Antonio house with their children now adults and moved away, maybe it is because they are now living on a limited income, or maybe they want to finally move to that warmer climate that they always dreamt about. Regardless your reason for moving once you achieve retiree status, it's important to give the task some deep thought.
Tip #1: Ponder Moving When the Weather Turns Colder
An advantage of being a retiree is that you’re no longer bound to the same schedule restrictions as people who need to work. You choose to go to the supermarket on a Thursday afternoon? Go for it, you are the master of your schedule. Want to catch a movie matinee while everyone else is working? Enjoy the show! And if you choose to move, then you could do so in the moving off-season, when both demand and costs at their lowest.
Warmer months are the most busy for moving for many reasons (good weather, children are out of school, etc.), and hence it's also the most expensive season to move. The months before or months after this peak can save you lots of money.
Tip #2: If You Don't Need It, Don't Pack It
The longer you live in your home, the more clutter you pick up. Everything, from sweaters you haven't worn in years, to papers from a job you barely recollect, fills in the nooks and crannies in your home. So, before your move, clean house. A good rule of thumb is to ask whether you've used the item in the last five years. If not, you likely don't need it. So, throw it away, donate it, give it away to whoever will take it off your hands, but if you don't need it, don't take it.
Tip #3: Have a Plan
Moving is something that requires planning, not on the spur of the moment, especially if you are retireed. You should sit down, do your analysis, and make sure you have everything organized. You need to know where you're moving to, how you are planning on getting there, if you will hire a professional San Antonio mover, your timeline, and most importantly, you need to have your budget figured out down to the nickel. And, just to be on the safe side, you should have a Plan B in place, just in case something changes, or doesn't work out the way you want or need it to.
Tip #4: Be Prepared
Planning is when you get your goals down on paper; preparation is when you start warming up. When you start preparing for a move, you are paring down your possessions, saving funds for the moving expenses, deciding when to list your house, etc. Preparation is key.
Tip #5: Take Your Time
Moving shouldn’t be done in a rush. Decisions need to be thought about, and you should have all the facts on-hand before drawing conclusions. Beyond that, you should give yourself time to prepare and resolve any loose ends that need to be resolved before you finish packing and head off to your new home. You don’t have to rush, so go at a gait you're comfortable with.
